Southport Flower Show 2000

The Southport flower show opened on 17 August and runs until 19 August, This report is split to cover the 2 main areas of interest at the show for gardeners, namely the Amateur competitive section and the Non Competitve Grand floral Marquee.

Section 1. Grand floral Marquee.

Containing in excess of 100 trade and display stands covering a huge variety of different plants and floral displays, The major displays from Sefton Borough Council and H.M. Prison Kirkham are at their usual standard of excelence, Kirkhams Victorian garden contains a stunning thatched cottage that must have taken weeks to costruct and is surrounded by a fine display of flora and vegetables.

Seftons Display is centered by what could be described as a volcano with a smoke generator providing the special effects, their bedding plant display is flawless.

A number of large gold medals where awarded Tiveys dahlias got one for their display of dahlias, Other large golds going to the showier stands of flowers and interesting plants. Our stand got a silver gilt, not bad for our first attempt but we intend to put up a bigger display for next yeas.

Section 2. Amateur competitive section. Plenty of dahlias staged of a very high quality unfortunately the Southport and Skem brigade of Rimmer and Clensy had no Dahlias to show due in part to inclement weather and idiotic council officials and a dodgy set of step ladders....nuff said..

As it turned out the exhibitors from further afeild fared better with both Pedro harker and Jim Mccosh both winning classes and Ivor Jones winning the Waterlilly class with Red Velvet.
