Certain groups of dahlias can be author subdivided into classification according
to their size
these are th primary sizes from which the sub groups are classified.
Giant Flowered Over 254mm or 10 inches diameter.
Large Flowered over 203mm or 8 inches diameter but smaller than 254mm or 10 inches diameter
Medium Flowered over 152mm or 6 inches diameter but smaller than 203 mm or 8 inches diameter
Small Flowered over 102mm or 4 inches diameter but smaller than 152mm or 6 inches diameter
Miniature Flowered over 52mm or 2 inches diameter but smaller than 102mm or 4 inches diameter
Pompon not over 52mm or 2 inches diameter
Waterlilly Dahlias, Decorative Dahlias, Cactus Dahlias and Semi Cactus Dahlias
may fall into the Miniature to Giant
flowered range, Ball dahlias into the Small to Miniature range and Pompon's
into the pompon range.
There are a few cultivars now available that have a dual classification, one
of these is Jomanda that can
be exhibited as either a Small or Miniature.
Size matters when it comes to competitive exhibition, it is for this reason
the National Dahlia Society introduced
the Judging Rings.
