A few notes from the Webmaster.
July 07
Hopefully the rain will end and we will get some much mneeded sunshine. after the wettest June on record the dahlias in the beds are looking decidedly soggy. Last week parts of the Wirral where hit by a hailstorm that deposited lumps of hail the size of golf balls on the ground. thankfully it missed us so the beds didnt have to cope with that as well. Due to the poor weather we are seeing an increase in the prevalence of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and dahlia smut, the other problem that will appear later in the season will be sclerotinia. This is caused by the high levels of rain. Spray now to prevent disease build up, Prevention is better than cure.!
January 05
It's cold and wet and blowing a gale outside but all the outdoor tubers are now snug in the stock greenhouse. 2 days of mild weather has allowed us to lift the last few out of the main beds and considering the amount of rain they look good. Just another 800 or so to lift and put on the benches before I go on holliday (with a bit of luck). Lots of new varieties are currently arriving at the nursery from different places to be trialled next season.
Happy New Year to you all and good growing for 2005...
November 04
Well, the end of another growing season of Highs and Lows........
The early part of the season in may and june was resonably dry, too say the least. Come August and the rain started to fall it rained and rained then we had fog, and yet more rain.
Finally it has dried up a bit and we are about to start lifting dahlias. something i do not look forward to.
It has however, by and large been a good season for the nursery lots of shows and lots
of awards, see the shows page.
The Northern Comittee of the National Dahlia Society had a spectacular result at the
RHS show at Tatton Park winning their first RHS Gold Medal. Prety good for a bunch
of Vagabonds. (Images to follow)
Talking of vagabonds ... Mr Sutherland still didn't manage to stage an entry for the Terry Clarke, What's the excuse this year Ian?
For this reason il'l leave the last word to Barry Smith and Homer Simpson!
